Kelcy Warren Honors a Mentor Through Decades of UTA Giving

Before he founded Energy Transfer, Kelcy Warren was a student at the University of Texas at Arlington. He graduated in 1978, and his relationship with the school has continued for decades since.

One of his UTA commitments honored a teacher. Warren established a graduate student fellowship in tribute to Syed Qasim, a former professor who served as his mentor. The fellowship was part of 10 gifts totaling $4 million that he made over 25 years. Other donations in that stretch supported Texas Tier One research initiatives and the Texas Business Hall of Fame Scholarship.

The Largest Gift in UTA History

In 2023, Kelcy Warren committed $12 million to UTA, the largest single donation the university has received. The school said the funds would help “elevate UTA to the forefront of the growing resource and energy engineering (REE) field.”

Warren described the gift in personal terms. “I am honored to give back to the institution that has played such a pivotal role in advancing my educational and professional journeys,” he said. He added, “Texas faces a critical need for highly skilled graduates who can manage energy resources, and this innovative REE program will help meet that demand.”

A Wider Circle of Support

Today Warren is Executive Chairman of Energy Transfer and sits on the University of Texas System Board of Regents, appointed by Governor Greg Abbott through 2025. His support for education spans grade school to university.

Dallas has seen his generosity firsthand. A $10 million donation in 2012 helped create Klyde Warren Park, a 5.2-acre green space reconnecting uptown and downtown, and a further $20 million is expanding it. He also supports MD Anderson Cancer Center, the March of Dimes, the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, and the West Dallas Youth Academy.

Kelcy Warren achievements have earned him membership in the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans and the Texas Business Hall of Fame, along with the Gas Processors Association’s Hanlon Award.

The fellowship for Syed Qasim may look small next to the record gift, but it shows how Kelcy Warren connects his success to the people who taught him. Refer to this article for additional information.
