Kelcy Warren Steps Back as CEO but His Influence Shapes Energy Transfer

In 2020, Kelcy Warren stepped away from the day-to-day role of chief executive at Energy Transfer, a company he had co-founded and steered through more than two decades of growth, crisis, and reinvention. His departure from the CEO seat marked a transition, not an exit.

New Leadership, Same Foundation

Warren now serves as executive chairman and chairman of the board of directors. Day-to-day operations are led by Mackie McCrea and Tom Long, who share co-CEO responsibilities. McCrea first joined Energy Transfer in 1997 and most recently served as president and commercial officer. Long was elevated from his role as chief financial officer, a position he had held since 2016. The leadership structure reflects a deliberate continuity executive who have grown alongside the company and share the strategic instincts Warren spent decades instilling.

Warren has spoken often about the importance of his team in building Energy Transfer. On the day of one interview, 17 members of his team had gathered for an early morning roundtable in his office a routine gathering to exchange ideas and generate business opportunities. That collegial culture, he suggests, is not incidental to Energy Transfer’s success but central to it. “We’ve done a good job of always asking, ‘What is the best purpose of that pipe?'” Warren said, framing the company’s approach in the kind of operationally grounded terms that have characterized his leadership.

What Warren Wants to Be Remembered For

Kelcy Warren does not measure legacy in pipeline miles or revenue figures, though both are impressive by any standard. What he hopes for is simpler. He wants his son to one day hear from someone who knew him: that Kelcy Warren was tough, but fair, and always told the truth. That aspiration, modest given the scale of what he built, says something important about how Warren views the work. Energy Transfer was not built for headlines. It was built to move energy and to do it the right way. Visit this page on LinkedIn, for more information.
