When an inmate escapes from jail, it is my job as part of a fugitive task force to set up a perimeter and get them off the streets as quickly as possible before they cause harm to anyone. We didn’t know where the suspect was hiding, and he had no family or friends in this area we could reach out for to get some assistance. Each minute that passed was making it harder to find this dangerous fugitive.
Me and my team returned to the last prison our suspect escaped, and we walked in while the team at Securus Technologies was installing their new inmate monitoring system. This call system was able to do the work of several officers, and was already in 2,600 jails and getting incredible results in controlling drugs and contraband getting into the jail. This Dallas-based company and their CEO Richard Smith are working towards the objective of making the world that much safer, so we decided to see if we could use this resource to help locate a dangerous fugitive.
The LBS software goes to work fast and picks up unique chatter from the inmates talking, and one call in particular really go our attention. Seems that the suspect we were hunting left a family member in the jail after promising him they would escape together. This inmate was irate to the point that he was telling his family over the phone that they should not help the suspect when he comes by because he betrayed his family before.
We were unaware of the connection at the time, but it was the key to connecting the dots and finding the in-laws who could harbor this fugitive. Since it was the only location he could hide without tipping his hand, we showed up in force and took this fugitive down with the help of Securus Technologies and an unknowing family member.
